The World Nude Surfing Guide: Every Beach Where You Can Ride Waves Naked

Can you surf naked? Yes – but only at a short list of breaks worldwide, and the intersection of naturism and real surf is narrower than beach guides imply. The Atlantic produces its best waves in winter, exactly when European water demands 5mm neoprene; the world’s warmest nude beaches sit in swell shadows. This is the complete global census: every place where riding waves and being nude genuinely overlap, the honest no-surf verdicts for famous naturist beaches, and the legal theory of what happens once you paddle out.

The Wetsuit Paradox

The central constraint of nude surfing is thermal. Below roughly 22 degrees Celsius, immersion without neoprene brings hypothermia and lost dexterity within half an hour – so the world’s great cold-water breaks (Norway’s Lofoten, Ireland’s Lahinch, Cape Town’s Atlantic seaboard) are physically wetsuit-locked for naturists. True nude surfing belongs to the warm-water corridor: Brazil’s northeast, Mexico’s Pacific, Hawaii, Florida, Australia’s Queensland summer, the Canary Islands, and a brief June-to-September window on the French and Iberian Atlantic coasts.

The Americas

Black’s Beach, San Diego is the sport’s spiritual home and its best wave. The La Jolla submarine canyon funnels deep-ocean energy straight onto the sand, producing hollow A-frame peaks that hold anything from three to twenty feet; the naturist tradition dates to a 1974-1977 legal designation and has survived as a fifty-year custom, and local surfers riding the canyon barrels nude is a documented part of surf history. Full guide here. Florida’s answer is Playalinda’s Lot 13 on the Space Coast, where surfers and naturists openly share punchy Atlantic sandbar peaks in summer water of 26-29 degrees. Little Beach, Maui refracts swell behind its cinder cone into manageable bodysurfing and bodyboarding waves in 24-27 degree water; adjacent Big Beach’s crushing shorebreak is a spinal-injury hazard. Haulover offers legal nude bodysurfing on gentle Miami shorebreak. Two verdicts: San Onofre’s Trail 6, the historic longboard-and-nudity spot, was banned in 2010 and is strictly patrolled; More Mesa’s Santa Barbara beach break is rideable but 13-18 degree water means the surfers wear wetsuits while the sand stays nude.

Brazil is the world capital of organized naturist surfing. Tambaba (Paraíba) holds the Tambaba Open de Surf Naturista – founded in 2008 during the 31st World Naturist Congress, staged every September since, with full nudity mandatory for competitors, judges and media inside the contest perimeter. It is the world’s only official annual nude surfing championship. Praia do Pinho hosted the Campeonato Surf Nu in 2012-13 and keeps a strong local surf culture in its summer window; Abricó in Rio’s Grumari reserve shares its swell corridor with the famous breaks of Prainha and throws heavy, hollow beach break; Massarandupió (Bahia) offers open Atlantic sandbars in 26-28 degree water. Verdict: Olho de Boi in Búzios is a spectacular cove with no rideable wave. Brazil’s wider naturist map is here.

Mexico: Zipolite, the country’s official clothing-optional beach, is a raw Pacific shorebreak – its Zapotec name means “beach of the dead,” the rip currents are genuinely lethal, and the lifeguard crew enforces the red flags. Nude bodyboarding is the local art form; stand-up surfers work the outer bars on the right tide. Boards rent along the strip. Riviera Nayarit’s surf towns (Sayulita, Punta Mita) are strictly textile – zero naturist surf. The honest no-surf list: Wreck Beach (Strait of Georgia, see our guide), Rooster Rock and Collins Beach (rivers, though the Gorge is world-class nude windsurfing territory), Playa Luna Chile (sheltered cove, 13-16 degrees), Puerto Bonito Peru, Playa Suecas Panama, and the Caribbean’s naturist beaches including Orient Bay, which offers trade-wind chop for bodyboards but no groundswell.

Europe and Africa

France owns Europe’s crown jewel. Plage des Culs Nus – “the bare bottoms beach” – sits between Hossegor and Seignosse on sandbars that the World Surf League’s championship tour has used as contest zones. On warm summer days surfers ride world-class barrels at the official municipal naturist beach completely naked; nothing else on the planet matches that combination. Up the coast, the naturist resort chain – CHM Montalivet (birthplace of the INF, with its own naturist surf club), Euronat, La Jenny and Arnaoutchot – fronts the same Atlantic beach break, rideable nude from June to September at 19-22 degrees. The French naturist empire is mapped here. Biarritz, for all its surf heritage, is strictly textile.

Spain: Barinatxe (La Salvaje) in the Basque Country is the verified double – an officially designated naturist zone beneath the cliffs that also hosts surf schools, consistent 3-8 foot A-frame peaks, and 20-22 degree summer water. Add Zarautz’s far eastern dune end, Valdearenas in Cantabria’s Liencres dunes, Galicia’s Doniños and Nemiña, and Bolonia’s naturist cove El Chorrito on winter Strait of Gibraltar swells. Spain’s legal framework travels into the water: the Ley de Costas places the entire coastal strip and sea in public maritime domain, and constitutional protection means surfing nude directly off a naturist zone is protected conduct. Context here.

Portugal: Meco is the pioneer – Portugal’s 1970s counter-culture naturist sanctuary, official since 1995, and a genuinely heavy Atlantic wedge when the sandbars shift. Bela Vista at Costa da Caparica, Adiça and the Alentejo’s Malhão complete the set (our Portugal guide covers access); Salto at Porto Covo, despite official naturist status, is a sheltered no-surf cove. Britain: Morfa Dyffryn’s official Welsh naturist stretch picks up moderate Cardigan Bay swell for longboarding at 15-17 summer degrees, and Cornwall’s dune ends (Penhale Sands at Perranporth, Godrevy’s northern fringe, the Pedn Vounder cove) carry unofficial naturist surfing on summer swells. Germany: Sylt’s Buhne 16 – the historic birthplace of German surfing and a celebrated FKK beach – rides North Sea wind waves nude on rare warm days.

Denmark is the legal edge case of the entire subject. Since the 1976 Ministry of Justice ruling, nude bathing is legal by default on every public beach in the country – which makes Klitmøller, “Cold Hawaii,” Denmark’s premier surf mecca, arguably the only place on Earth where nude surfing at a world-class break is simply, unambiguously legal. The etiquette is practical: walk five hundred meters from the crowded Bunkers reef into the dune reserves before dropping in. Water is 16-18 summer degrees. Our Denmark guide covers the 1976 law in full.

The outliers: South Africa’s Sandy Bay offers high-performance barrels in the Cape Doctor’s offshore winds – in 10-13 degree Benguela water, so the surfing is wetsuit business even where the beach is nude. Fuerteventura’s Corralejo dunes front rideable Flag Beach peaks, and Lanzarote’s Famara – the “Hawaii of Europe” – combines a six-kilometer world-class beach break with an established naturist zone at its far northern end, in 19-23 degree water year-round. And the ultimate edge case: Réunion, the legendary Indian Ocean surf island, where prefectural decrees after the bull-shark crisis ban swimming and surfing within 300 meters of shore almost everywhere – the naturist cove Souris Chaude has no surf, and entering the ocean there is both illegal and genuinely dangerous.

Asia-Pacific

Australia: Samurai Beach in Port Stephens is the pick – a gazetted clothing-optional section inside Tomaree National Park fronting a real open-ocean beach break. North Swanbourne (Perth) and Warnbro offer rideable Indian Ocean peaks. Queensland’s Alexandria Bay at Noosa is the tolerated unofficial gem: excellent sandbar peaks beside world-famous point breaks, discreetly surfed nude for decades despite zero legal gazettal in Queensland. Maslin Beach, Australia’s first legal nude beach (1975), holds its famous Nude Games – renamed from “Olympics” after the Australian Olympic Committee’s trademark lawyers intervened – but on the flat Gulf St Vincent it is a land-events-only affair. Critical update: Byron Bay’s Tyagarah Beach lost its 25-year clothing-optional status in June 2024 and is now patrolled. Australia’s short competitive history – Bondi’s nude surfing contest ran 1997-99 until Waverley Council banned it in December 1999 – leaves Tambaba standing alone as the world’s only sanctioned nude surf championship.

New Zealand is the quiet achiever: nudity is not illegal absent intent to offend, and the naturist breaks are real – Breaker Bay takes heavy Cook Strait swell, Taranaki’s black-sand beach breaks near Waionga Park, Uretiti’s gentle east-coast peaks, Peka Peka and Hokitika. The full New Zealand guide covers the case law. Asia is a zero zone: Indonesia’s Pornography Law extends to the water – a nude surfing ban on the Bukit was documented as early as 2006, and the well-publicized deportations are the enforcement reality; Thailand (Section 388), Japan (Article 174, its nude bathing confined to indoor sento) and the Philippines (Article 200) offer no overlap between surf mecca and legal nudity.

The Law of Surfing Nude

Three principles govern the legal water. First, most clothing-optional designations run from the dunes only to the mean high- or low-water mark; the water itself is public domain, so the protection is customary rather than territorial – paddle directly seaward of a designated zone and you carry the beach’s tolerance with you, drift along the coast to a textile break and you enter summary-offence territory. Second, visibility changes the analysis: standing upright on a wave makes you visible to whole beaches, so the legal tests become intent and context – which is why surfing, an athletic activity, has repeatedly defeated lewdness charges where static exposure might not (California’s Penal Code 314 requires proven lewd intent, and courts from New Zealand to Brazil have treated athletic nudity as non-sexual). Third, the safest legal ground is the full stack: an official naturist designation plus warm water plus a beach break – Denmark by statute, Brazil by championship tradition, France and Spain by designation and constitutional protection.

Surfboard with EVA deck pad

Practical Notes for the Nude Surfer

Wax is the enemy: bare skin against waxed fiberglass produces severe chest and thigh rash, so ride a full EVA deck pad or a soft-top and use anti-chafe balm. Confine nude surfing to sandy beach breaks – a nude wipeout onto coral is a staph infection waiting to happen. Sunscreen the areas that never see sun. Respect both lineups: right-of-way rules apply, and photography at naturist beaches is prohibited. The five-break short list for a first trip: Tambaba for the championship experience, Black’s for the wave of your life, Culs Nus for European barrels, Klitmøller for legal certainty, Alexandria Bay for the perfect Australian point-break weekend.
