The Carolinas are one of the American South’s quiet naturist successes: three landed resorts between the two states, a genuine regional 5K, and a legal picture that is unusually easy to summarize. There is no public nude beach anywhere in either state. Every lawful option sits behind a gate, and the gates are worth the drive.
South Carolina: Carolina Foothills
Carolina Foothills Resort in Chesnee, in Spartanburg County near the North Carolina line, is the region’s anchor. Nestled in the Blue Ridge foothills, it runs a 24/7 swimming pool, hot tub, clubhouse, volleyball courts, RV and tent camping, rental cabins, and nature trails. Its flagship event is the Buck Creek Streak, a nude trail run with 5K and 7.3K categories that draws runners from across the Southeast and appears on our worldwide nude runs census.
Two names that circulate in South Carolina do not exist there. There is no Sea Mountain resort in the state; Sea Mountain Inn is in Desert Hot Springs, California. There is also no Cypress Cove in South Carolina; that is the 300-acre landmark in Kissimmee, Florida. Both get misfiled by search engines, and both corrections matter if you are planning a trip.
North Carolina: Two Very Different Grounds
Whispering Pines Nudist Resort in Ocean Isle Beach, in Brunswick County near the coast, is a seasonal clothing-free resort with RV sites, tent camping, a pool, a clubhouse, and a social calendar built around beach-season weekends. It is the Carolinas’ coastal option.
Bar S Ranch in Reidsville, north of Greensboro in Rockingham County, is the inland heavyweight: more than 300 acres of a former working cattle ranch, with a central seven-acre lake stocked with bass and bream, miles of wooded hiking and golf-cart trails, an RV park, cabins, a clubhouse, and a pool. It has operated for more than 37 consecutive years, since about 1989. The rules are strict and clearly posted: social nudity whenever weather permits, a mandatory towel policy, BYOB permitted but intoxication not, and single men required to call ahead for pre-screening.
One clarification about a name that sounds relevant and is not: the Carolina Nature Coalition is an environmental nonprofit in New Bern that works on clean water, bat conservation, and river ecosystems. It has nothing to do with naturism.
The Law
Neither state is ambiguous. North Carolina criminalizes willful exposure of private parts in a public place in the presence of others under N.C. Gen. Stat. § 14-190.1, a Class 2 misdemeanor, with § 14-4 enforcing local ordinances. Female toplessness is legally permitted in specific municipalities, most notably Asheville, where equal-protection policy allows topfree equality, but genital and buttock exposure is criminal statewide. South Carolina’s S.C. Code Ann. § 16-15-130 makes indecent exposure a Class 1 misdemeanor for willful and malicious exposure in a public place or on another’s private property without consent.
The public-side verdict is the same on both coasts and in between. Cape Hatteras National Seashore and the Outer Banks are enforced by the National Park Service under 36 C.F.R. § 3.21 and county sheriffs. Lake Norman and Jordan Lake are patrolled by Wildlife Resources Commission officers. Myrtle Beach City Code § 14-61 bans nudity on all public beaches and oceanfront areas with immediate summonses, and Charleston and Hilton Head are equally strict. There are zero public nude beaches or lake spots in either state.
Events Worth Planning Around
The Buck Creek Streak at Carolina Foothills is the marquee date. Bar S Ranch runs seasonal opening rallies, bass and bream fishing tournaments on its lake, and summer holiday socials. Whispering Pines fills its calendar through the coastal season. For readers who want the wider circuit, the Carolinas sit between the Florida resort belt and the Virginia and Pennsylvania clubs, which makes a spring road trip genuinely viable.
The Carolinas will not give you a naked shoreline. What they give you instead is three well-run grounds, one of the South’s best 5K events, and a legal code so clear that you never have to wonder where you stand.
