Naturism in Florida: Beyond Haulover, the Resort Capital of America

Florida calls itself the Naturist Capital of North America, and for once the tourism-board boast is true: it has the East Coast’s largest legally designated public nude beach, the country’s densest resort ecosystem, and a year-round season. Our full Haulover Beach guide covers the Miami flagship in depth – this is the statewide picture.

The Public Beaches

Haulover (Miami-Dade) remains the gold standard: formally designated by the county, lifeguarded, busy year-round. Between Miami and the Space Coast sits Playalinda Beach at Canaveral National Seashore – and here honesty matters: public nudity is illegal on Playalinda under Brevard County Ordinance 95-21 (1995) and federal seashore rules. The northernmost Lot 13 nevertheless carries a decades-old clothing-optional tradition, with rangers and sheriff’s deputies periodically issuing citations ($150-500). People go anyway – rocket-launch views included – but it is risk-based tolerance, not law. Know the difference before you disrobe.

The Resort Capital

The stretch between Tampa and Orlando – Pasco County above all – hosts the greatest concentration of licensed clothing-optional resorts in the Americas:

  • Cypress Cove (Kissimmee): The flagship – 300 acres around a 50-acre lake, with hotel, villas, RV sites, and full resort amenities, and the closest resort to the Disney corridor.
  • Lake Como Family Nudist Resort (Lutz): Member-owned and operating since 1941 – old-school Florida naturism with lakeside cabins and RV sites.
  • Paradise Lakes (Lutz) and Caliente (Land O’ Lakes): The modern, nightlife-leaning resorts – pools, Tiki bars, condos, and a younger party profile.
  • Sunsport Gardens (Loxahatchee): Palm Beach County’s quiet, eco-minded option, with a strong community of long-term residents.

Practical Notes for Florida Naturism

  • Season: Genuinely year-round – winter is peak snowbird season at the resorts, while South Florida beaches stay busy November through April. Summer is hot, stormy, and hurricane-aware: check the forecast June through November.
  • Etiquette: Florida’s resorts run on AANR norms – towel everywhere, no staring, cameras locked in the car (many resorts ban phones outright in common areas). The public beaches follow the same social contract.
  • First visit: The resorts are the friendliest on-ramp in American naturism: day passes, first-timer orientations, and no pressure to disrobe beyond pool areas.
  • Getting around: Haulover works from anywhere in Miami; base yourself in Miami Beach for beaches, or Kissimmee/Tampa for the resort circuit.

Florida plus New Jersey (Gunnison Beach) are the two East Coast states with formally legal public options – the honest alternative for readers misled elsewhere on the coast, as we cover in our Northeast myth-buster.
