The Naturist’s Guide to Burning Man: Nudity, Naked Oil Wrestling & Playa Survival

Once a year, a temporary city of seventy thousand people rises on a dry lakebed in northern Nevada – and within its gates, clothing becomes genuinely optional at a scale that exists almost nowhere else in America. Welcome to Burning Man, the world’s largest clothing-optional event on US soil.

Is Nudity Actually Legal at Burning Man?

Yes – and the legality is more solid than most visitors realize. The legal foundation rests on Nevada Revised Statutes 201.220, which criminalizes indecent exposure only when performed with lewd intent – intent to arouse, gratify, or offend. Simple, non-sexual social nudity does not meet that standard, and the event operates on federal land under an annual Bureau of Land Management Special Recreation Permit with a Temporary Closure Order establishing Black Rock City in Pershing County. Both the Pershing County Sheriff’s Office and BLM Rangers, who patrol the event extensively, explicitly acknowledge that simple public nudity is permitted inside the city limits.

The line is absolute and well-policed: public sexual activity, masturbation, and any non-consensual exposure or touching are treated as crimes and prosecuted. Black Rock City is clothing-optional, not adult-tolerant of lewdness.

The Naked Events

Nudity at Burning Man isn’t confined to sunbathing – it’s woven into the event’s participatory culture under the principles of Radical Self-Expression and Radical Inclusion:

  • Naked Oil Wrestling (Camp Gymnasium): The event you came for. Held on multiple afternoons during Burn week – typically Monday, Wednesday, and Friday around 4:00 PM at Camp Gymnasium in the 7:30 sector – participants strip down, get coated in coconut or olive oil, and wrestle in a supervised ring, inspired by the naked athletics of the ancient Greek Olympics. All genders, all body types, no experience required; referees keep matches playful and safe.
  • Critical Tits: A legendary mass topless bicycle ride held every Friday afternoon since 1996, drawing thousands of women across the open playa.
  • Human Carcass Wash: A communal, non-sexual group washing line – exactly what it sounds like, and a beloved dust-removal institution.
  • Naked yoga and figure drawing sessions run daily at Camp Gymnasium and its collaborators.

One note: a rumored camp called “Bodywrong” does not exist – if you see the name online, it’s a misremembering of Camp Gymnasium or the Human Carcass Wash.

Consent and Photography Rules

Photographing or filming unclothed participants without explicit prior consent is one of the most serious violations of Burner culture. Professional cameras require official media credentials, and unauthorized filming of naked people can mean ejection, credential confiscation, and camp bans. If you attend, the operating rule is simple: ask before you shoot – and expect the answer to be no more often than not.

Regional Burns: Closer-to-Home Naked Camps

The Burning Man ethos extends to official regional events across the country, and most private-land regionals are standardly clothing-optional: Burning Flipside near Austin, Lakes of Fire in Michigan, SOAK in Oregon, Element 11 in Utah, and Firefly in Vermont. Public-land regionals are stricter – Miami’s Love Burn, on municipal land, restricts clothing-optional freedom to enclosed theme-camp spaces.

Surviving the Playa Naked

The Black Rock Desert sits above 4,000 feet, and the environment punishes exposed skin faster than you’d expect:

  • Alkaline dust: The playa’s calcium carbonate dust chemically burns and cracks skin. Carry a spray bottle with a 1:4 white vinegar-to-water solution to neutralize it, then moisturize heavily. This is not optional – “playa foot” and cracked skin are the event’s most common ailments.
  • UV at altitude: Broad-spectrum sunscreen everywhere, reapplied constantly. There is no shade on the open playa.
  • Temperature swings: 90-100°F afternoons drop to 40°F nights. Carry warm layers and lights in a daypack even when you leave camp naked.
  • Footwear: Bare feet are a rookie mistake – the crust is hot, sharp, and caustic. Boots stay on even when everything else comes off.
  • Hydration: 1-1.5 gallons of water daily with electrolytes.

Tickets and Timing

The event runs the week before Labor Day (late August to early September). Tickets run from $575 upward and are sold in structured waves: the Stewards Sale in March, the Main Sale in April, and the OMG Sale in August. Register a Burner profile early – demand far exceeds supply. For the legal context of the land under Black Rock City, see our guide to nudity on BLM land.
