Haulover Nude Beach Is One of a Kind, But There Should Be More Like It in America

September 4, 2021 | 6 min read

Haulover Nude Beach, where clothing is optional, is the best-known nude beach in America. It sits in the northern part of the Miami metropolitan area, on the grounds of Haulover Beach Park in Miami-Dade County, Florida. There’s no need to traverse treacherous terrain to reach it, and you don’t have to worry about being cited for swimming nude. It’s a public beach like any other, with amenities and facilities nearby and lifeguards on duty. It is also a nude beach, where going without clothing is legal and nobody bats an eye. Miami-Dade County officially designated the northern stretch of the beach clothing-optional in 1991.

More Than South Beach

When we think of Miami, we think of its beaches. But it is also one of the cities with the largest Latino communities in the United States, brimming with colors, aromas, sounds and food, and with a welcoming culture that is more than notable. The concept of family is deeply rooted in the city and its people. South Beach is perhaps the best-known part of Miami for most Americans outside Florida, and women, just like men, have the option of enjoying the beach topless there. Haulover is lesser known, but in our opinion it enriches Miami’s culture and is a key component of the city’s identity.

The region also has European elements in its history. Florida was the first state where the Spanish landed, and many Miami residents still feel those connections with Europe and Spain, with many descended from Spaniards who settled in the Caribbean, especially Cuba. Just as people in Spain enjoy their nude beaches, people in Miami do the same, something not all Americans can easily do.

Legal, Patrolled and Family-Friendly

Haulover is among a small handful of legally sanctioned clothing-optional beaches in the United States. Visitors can undress calmly and not worry about whether clothing is required. It’s important to emphasize, though, that although nudity is legal here, obscenity and sex are not. Law enforcement patrols the beach on ATVs and keeps an eye out for that kind of behavior. We believe their presence is positive: it reassures visitors, helps deter theft, and makes the experience pleasant for everyone, including families. The police presence also reinforces the legality of the beach, which lets you enjoy the experience to the fullest.

We often associate being nude with insecurity: “I’m exposed, I’m vulnerable, I don’t feel safe.” Legally sanctioned nude beaches dispel those assumptions. Sometimes you feel safer when there are more people around, because there’s less opportunity for something bad to happen unnoticed. At Haulover you can also access a range of public services. Albert Pantaleon, a South Florida resident and advocate for the beach, and Christopher Hernandez, Manager of Haulover Beach Park and Marina, both described the nude beach as simply another public service, and that is how it is managed. As you lie down, walk or swim, remember that you are in a city and state that wanted to see the desire for a beach like this fulfilled, and that found a safe, civil and respectful way to make it possible.

The Feeling of Haulover

Of course, being nude for long in the tundra is not safe. But in sunny, warm Miami, clothing isn’t necessary, and Haulover is perfect for experiencing that. When you come across a police officer at Haulover, you feel a sense of security and calm: not only am I safe from the law because I’m not breaking anything, but this person is looking out for my well-being whether I’m wearing clothes or not.

When you enter the water off Haulover you feel gratitude for being in such a privileged place. Walking the shore with nothing on, in one of the most populated cities in the country, with high-rise condominiums rising behind the dunes, it’s hard to describe the calm. It’s peaceful yet exciting at the same time. If one can feel this safe in a place like this, then other places in the United States could use a beach like Haulover’s, where people can be free without shame or fear of repercussions.

Why America Needs More Beaches Like It

It would be hard to find a place exactly like Haulover, because Miami is unique. But the positive effects of a nude beach are worth considering, especially in how visitors see themselves and others. We believe a nude beach increases the quality of life of the residents of the city and region where it’s located. And because legal nude beaches remain relatively rare in the United States, the experience they offer could attract many domestic and foreign tourists and positively impact the local economy.

Planning Your Visit

  • Where: the clothing-optional section is the northern stretch of Haulover Beach Park, between lifeguard towers 12 and 16, clearly marked with signs.
  • Rules: no sexual behavior, no photography of others without consent, no glass or alcohol on the beach, and stay inside the marked zone if you’re nude.
  • Bring: reef-safe SPF 50+, water, a towel, and a light cover-up for the walk from the parking lot.
  • Season: warm year-round, which makes it one of the few U.S. nude beaches that works in winter.
