Naturism in Overseas France: Orient Bay to the Pacific, the French Nude Travel Empire

France runs the world’s second-largest naturist empire, and almost none of it is in France. From the Caribbean to the Indian Ocean to the Pacific, the French overseas territories carry the Hexagone’s legal tradition abroad: the Penal Code punishes only sexual exhibition, never simple nudity, so naturism blooms wherever local tolerance lets it. The result is a genuinely global map – two functioning naturist beaches in the Caribbean, one in the Indian Ocean, and a long tail of private-only realities from Nouméa to Papeete. Here is the honest territory-by-territory guide.

Saint-Martin: Orient Bay, the Caribbean Flagship

Orient Bay, on the French northern side of Saint-Martin, is the Caribbean’s most famous naturist stretch. For decades the beach anchoring its northern end was home to Club Orient, the region’s flagship naturist resort – until Hurricane Irma erased it on September 6, 2017. Rebuilding has been pledged repeatedly since, but as of 2026 the resort remains unbuilt; the site sits empty while its former garden-side stretch of sand carries on. And the beach itself is the point: the naturist end of Orient Bay continues by long usage and local tolerance, with chairs and umbrellas for rent on the old Club Orient frontage, no resort required. The contrast with the Dutch side of the island is instructive – Sint Maarten has no naturist options; only the French half does.

Guadeloupe: Anse Tarare, the Official One

At the wild tip of Pointe des Châteaux near Saint-François, Anse Tarare holds a rare title: the only officially authorized naturist beach in Guadeloupe. Reached by a short walk along the rocks from the end of the D118, it’s a small white-sand cove with clear water and no facilities – bring water, water shoes, and your own shade, because mid-day the sun is merciless and the beach has none. The vibe is low-key and respectful; the far end is quieter than the entrance.

Martinique: Anse Trabaud, the Tolerated One

On Martinique’s wild south-Atlantic coast, Anse Trabaud stretches more than a kilometre between Pointe d’Enfer and Pointe Baham. There is no decree here – the status is tolerance – but naturists have made this beach their own for years, and local tourism listings now describe it plainly as the island’s naturist beach. Access is the filter: the track in from Anse Michel is rough even on foot, which keeps crowds away and preserves the quiet. Currents can run strong on the Atlantic side; the far end of the beach is where naturist use concentrates.

Réunion: The Indian Ocean Outpost

Nearly 9,000 kilometers from Paris, Réunion carries the French naturist tradition into the Indian Ocean at the Plage de la Souris Chaude near Saint-Leu – the only naturist beach tradition in France’s overseas Indian Ocean. Basalt coves, a guarded swim zone, and an active local naturist association make it a genuine destination rather than a rumor. We cover it in full in our dedicated Réunion naturism guide.

New Caledonia: Discretion in the Lagoon

France’s Pacific territory has no official naturist zone, and New Caledonian social norms are conservative enough that public nudity would cause real friction. What exists is the geography: a UNESCO-listed lagoon dotted with hundreds of uninhabited islets. The naturist reality is private and nautical – chartered boats and islet day-trips where a quiet cove becomes yours for the afternoon, and villa rentals with private pools around Nouméa. It is naturism by arrangement, not by destination.

French Polynesia: Private Villas Only

Tahiti, Moorea, and Bora Bora are the postcard end of the French overseas world and its most naturist-proof corner. Polynesian society, shaped by a strong missionary-era modesty tradition, does not sunbathe nude, and there are no naturist beaches or clubs anywhere in French Polynesia. What the islands offer instead is spectacular privacy: overwater bungalows and villa resorts where a private deck over the lagoon delivers the naturist experience entirely indoors-side. If nudity matters to your trip, book the villa, skip the public beach.

French Guiana: The Honest Zero

The finale is a lesson. French Guiana is every bit as French as Guadeloupe – same law, same Penal Code, same flags – and it has no naturism at all. The reason is geography: the Amazonian coast is silty, waveless, and brown with estuary mud; locals escape the heat in forest swimming creeks (criques), not the ocean. The one famous sandy stretch, Plage des Hattes at Awala-Yalimapo, is a protected leatherback turtle nesting sanctuary where the last thing anyone should bring is a crowd. French law alone, it turns out, doesn’t create naturism – it only permits nature to do the work, and in Guiana the Atlantic never did.

Practical Guide

  • When to go: Caribbean territories (Saint-Martin, Guadeloupe, Martinique) shine December through April; Réunion’s austral winter (May-November) is its dry, mild season; New Caledonia and Tahiti are best May-October; French Guiana’s relative dry season is August-November.
  • Getting there: Paris remains the grand hub for all of them; from the Americas, connect through Miami or San Juan for the Caribbean territories, through Johannesburg or Bangkok for Réunion.
  • The golden rule of the whole map: official zones and long-tolerated beaches are communal and camera-free; everything else is private – villas, charters, and closed doors.
