Caribbean Nude Beach Reality Check: Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, USVI, BVI and Belize

The Caribbean is full of nude-beach lists, and most of them are wrong. Beyond the region’s genuine naturist destinations – Jamaica’s resorts, the Riviera Maya, Cuba’s cays, Zipolite, the French islands – there’s a second tier of islands where the internet promises options that do not exist. This is the honest map for five of them: the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands, the British Virgin Islands, and Belize.

Dominican Republic: Naturism Is Dead Here

Old articles still recommend the DR for clothing-optional travel; the reality is a graveyard. Caliente Caribe, the pioneer, closed for good over a decade ago. Original Group bet big with Temptation Miches, which opened in late 2022 and failed commercially, closing permanently in January 2024 – the property has been reflagged as family resorts (Hilton’s Zemi Miches, a Marriott). Today’s Punta Cana “adults-only” resorts are strictly swimsuit-mandatory, public nudity is criminalized under the Penal Code, and there is no naturist association or INF presence in the country. There is nothing to book.

Puerto Rico: One Real Option, and It’s Private

Puerto Rico’s Penal Code (Ley 146-2012, Art. 136) makes public exposure a misdemeanor – a felony if minors are present – and every beach is public land under the maritime-terrestrial zone. The internet’s favorites are myths: Seven Seas, Crash Boat, and the Rincón surf beaches are heavily visited family beaches where nudity would end in police intervention, and Cayo Icacos and Caja de Muertos are patrolled nature reserves. The one spot with a real (if illicit) tradition is Playa Escondida near Fajardo, reached by a 20-30 minute mangrove hike from Seven Seas – but DRNA rangers and police run periodic sweeps, the rip currents are dangerous, and being caught means arrest risk. The legitimate option: Coquí del Mar in San Juan’s Ocean Park, an adult guesthouse with a clothing-optional pool and patio, or a private walled villa rental.

USVI: What Happened to Salomon Beach

The most instructive story in the Caribbean belongs to Salomon Bay on St. John. From the 1960s through the 1990s, this small cove – reached by the 20-minute Lind Point Trail from Cruz Bay – was the Caribbean’s premier tolerated nude beach, a famous stop for sailors and hikers. Then came the reckoning: roughly 60% of St. John is Virgin Islands National Park, federal law (36 CFR 7.74 plus the Superintendent’s Compendium) prohibits nudity on park land, and by the early 2000s the NPS had installed “Bathing Suits Required” signs and put foot and boat patrols on the beach. Salomon is strictly clothed today, and neighboring Honeymoon Beach is a commercialized family hub. On St. Thomas, the persistent rumors about Botany Bay, Secret Harbour, and Mandahl are pure fiction, and USVI Code § 1022 makes indecent exposure a territorial offense. There are no nude beaches in the USVI. None.

BVI and Belize: Straight Zeros

The British Virgin Islands combine strict public-indecency law with small-island social norms where everybody knows everybody; there is zero tolerance on land, and the only viable avenue is a private crewed yacht charter – where you’re effectively in international privacy anyway. Belize is the same verdict with less coastline: the Summary Jurisdiction Offences Act criminalizes public nudity, there has never been a clothing-optional resort in the country, and the famously conservative social climate makes even topless sunbathing rare. Neither belongs on a naturist itinerary except by yacht or private villa.

Where to Go Instead

The honest redirection, in order of proximity and legality:

  • Jamaica – Hedonism II and the Couples properties, our full resort guide.
  • Riviera Maya – Hidden Beach and company, the resort guide, plus Zipolite for Mexico’s legal public beach.
  • Cuba – the naturist cays, our guide (Canadians and Europeans only, realistically).
  • Colombia – private organized events through FENANCO, our reality check.

The pattern to carry: in the Caribbean, nudity lives behind resort gates, on private boats, and in organized private events – never on public sand outside those few sanctioned places.
