Nude Lithuania: The Curonian Spit, Vilnius’s Official River Beach and the Baltic’s Biggest Naturist Scene

The Baltics’ Naturist Powerhouse

Among the three Baltic states, Lithuania has gone furthest with naturism: a network of officially designated municipal nudist beaches from the UNESCO World Heritage Curonian Spit to a city beach in the capital itself, a century-old tradition of gender-segregated nude beaches, a nationally registered nudist association, and sauna culture where nudity is simply hygiene. Nida’s nudist beach has even made CNN’s list of the world’s best nude beaches. Here’s the full guide.

The Coast: Curonian Spit and Beyond

  • Nida (Curonian Spit) – the flagship. An official co-ed municipal nudist beach designated by Neringa Municipality in 2008, on fine white quartz sand between pine-forested dunes on a UNESCO World Heritage national park. It’s the most spectacular naturist setting in the Baltics.
  • Juodkrante (Curonian Spit) – Neringa’s second official nudist beach, north of the village, quieter than Nida’s.
  • Smiltne (near Klaipeda) – an official nudist beach on the Baltic side of the spit, reached by the short ferry across the lagoon from Klaipeda.
  • Nemirseta / Pajurio Regional Park (Palanga area) – a designated municipal nudist zone, formalized around 2022 after decades of informal use.
  • Sventoji – an official nudist beach north of the resort town, near the Latvian border.
  • Preila and Pervalka – tolerated quiet stretches between the Spit’s settlements.

Strict rules on the Spit: the Curonian Spit is a protected national park. Walking on the foredunes off the marked boardwalks is prohibited and fined – always use the designated wooden trails to reach the nudist sections.

Inland: Vilnius and Kaunas

Lithuania is unusual in having official nude beaches inland, too. Valakampiai 2nd Beach in Vilnius opened as an official municipal co-ed nudist beach on the Neris River in June 2020, complete with signage, changing cabins and benches – a rare example of a capital city formally opening a public nude beach. Kaunas has the officially recognized Lampedziai Lake nudist bathing area. Summer city naturism is genuinely easy here.

The Gender-Segregated Beach Tradition

A distinctive Baltic phenomenon: for more than a century, Lithuanian resorts (Palanga, Klaipeda’s Giruliai, Nida) have maintained designated women’s beacheses (Moteru papludimys) and men’s beaches (Vyru papludimys) where bathers sunbathe and swim entirely nude, single-sex by design and by strict enforcement. The women’s beaches in particular are treasured safe spaces – men trespassing there are removed by beach patrol. They coexist alongside the co-ed official nudist beaches, and together the system gives Lithuania one of the most structured public nude beach cultures in Europe.

The Law

Public nudity outside designated zones is an administrative offence – petty hooliganism under Article 481 of the Code of Administrative Offences, with fines from about 30 to 140 euros. Inside municipally designated zones, nudity is fully legal, regulated under national beach hygiene norms, and marked with official boundary signage. In short: Lithuania takes a rules-based approach, and it works – boundaries are respected, and within them nobody blinks.

Pirtis: The Lithuanian Sauna

The traditional Lithuanian steam bath (pirtis) shares the Baltic ritual DNA: whisking with birch, oak and juniper (vantojimas), herbal steam, salt and honey scrubs, and cold plunges into lakes or snow. In private and traditional pirtis, complete nudity is the universal norm – swimwear is discouraged on hygiene grounds. Commercial water parks (Druskininkai Aquapark, Vilnius’s Vichy) require swimsuits in pool areas but run dedicated adult sauna complexes and textile-free sauna nights where clothing is banned in the steam rooms. The Lithuanian Bath Academy keeps the traditional ritual alive, and bare sauna evenings are a quiet fixture of the winter social calendar.

When to Go and Practicalities

  • Season: mid-June to late August, peaking July-early August. Air 20-27°C, sea a brisk 16-20°C; inland lakes and the Neris run warmer. Around Midsummer (Jonines) you get nearly 18 hours of daylight.
  • Wind strategy: the Baltic coast is breezy; locals dig wind-shelters in the dune sand and set up fabric windbreaks. Do as the Lithuanians do.
  • Getting around: Klaipeda is the gateway to the Curonian Spit (ferry to Smiltyne; buses to Nida). Palanga and Sventoji are coastal bus runs; Vilnius’s Valakampiai is a short city bus ride.
  • Community: the Lithuanian Nudists Association (Menulis), registered in 2024, and active local groups lobby municipalities and organize seasonal events – the most organized naturist community in the Baltics.

The Bottom Line

Lithuania is the Baltics’ naturist benchmark: official beaches on a UNESCO peninsula, an official nude beach in the capital, a women’s-beach tradition over a century old, and a sauna culture where clothes are the odd thing out. Time a trip for July, split it between the Curonian Spit and Vilnius, and you’ll find the most quietly confident nude culture in northern Europe.

Flying in? Vilnius (VNO) is the main gateway to Lithuania’s naturist coast; for the Curonian Spit and Nida, Palanga (PLQ) on the coast is often handier. Search and compare fares on Kayak. Disclosure: affiliate link – if you book through it, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Where to Stay on the Curonian Spit

Nida and the Curonian Spit are the heart of Lithuanian naturism, and the village itself is the best base: small hotels and guesthouses a short walk from the dunes. If Nida is full, look at Smiltynė on the Klaipėda side of the ferry:
