Nude Latvia: Five Naturist Beaches and the Pirts Sauna Tradition

Europe’s Most Underrated Nude Beach Country

Latvia rarely appears on nude travel lists, which is odd, because it has something most of Europe lacks: municipally designated naturist beaches – not one but several – spread along both the Gulf of Riga and the open Baltic coast, all reachable by cheap suburban train from one of Europe’s prettiest capitals. Pair that with the pirts, Latvia’s ancient nude sauna ritual, and you have a quietly complete naturist destination.

Latvia’s Naturist Beaches

  • Vecaki / Kalngale (Gulf of Riga) – Latvia’s oldest and largest nudist beach: a wide stretch of white sand backed by dunes and pine forest, beginning about a kilometer north of the main family beach at Vecaki. Popular with Riga locals, with informal beach volleyball and a genuinely friendly atmosphere. About 30-40 minutes from central Riga by train.
  • Incupe (Saulkrasti) – an officially designated nudist beach, right down to exact coordinates in Saulkrasti’s municipal regulations. Secluded, scenic, dune-backed; about 50 minutes from Riga by train.
  • Jurmala – Lielupe / Bulliciems – a historic naturist zone at the quiet eastern end of Latvia’s premier resort, near the Lielupe river mouth. Nude sunbathing in Bulliciems goes back to the 1920s-30s, and it remains the mellow alternative to Jurmala’s crowded central beaches. About 30 minutes from Riga.
  • Liepaja – an officially designated nudist section in the city’s municipal beach rules, on the open Baltic coast toward Perkone.
  • Ventspils – a recognized clothing-optional stretch south of the Blue Flag central beach.

Every one of these is a wild beach: no sunbeds, no lifeguards, no beach bars on the nude stretch. Pack water, food, and shade.

The Law

Public nudity isn’t specifically criminalized in Latvian national law; outside designated zones it’s handled as a public-order matter under administrative rules, and municipal beach bylaws govern the coast. Inside the marked zones, nudity is fully legal and respected by municipal police. On the main family beaches (like Jurmala’s Majori or central Vecaki), it’s explicitly forbidden and fined. On unmanaged remote stretches of coast, discreet nudity is common and effectively unpoliced. The Latvian system is refreshingly clear: the zones are signed, the rules are published, and everyone relaxes.

The Pirts Ritual

Latvia’s traditional sauna, the pirts, is a multi-hour wellness ceremony guided by a sauna master (pirtsmeistars or pirtsmate): herbal steam, heat, clay, honey and salt scrubs, whisking with fresh branches (persana), and cold plunges. In traditional and countryside pirts, nudity is customary and considered necessary – proper scrubbing and sweating happen skin-first. In commercial hotel spas and water parks (Jurmala SPA, Livu Aquapark), swimwear is required, so seek out the countryside pirts centers and guided rituals, which typically run nude or towel-only. There’s no national naturist federation and no naturist resorts in Latvia – the pirts is effectively the national naturist institution.

When to Go and Practicalities

  • Season: late June to mid-August. Air 20-28°C, sea peaking at 17-22°C – brisk by Mediterranean standards, perfect by Baltic ones.
  • Getting there: trains from Riga Central run directly to Vecaki/Kalngale (~30-40 min), Lielupe (~30 min), and Incupe (~50 min), costing a couple of euros. Jurmala’s beaches are also walkable from Jurmala’s train stations.
  • Dunes: Baltic dunes are fragile protected ecosystems – use the wooden walkways, don’t trample the grass.
  • Ticks: the pine forests behind the beaches carry tick-borne encephalitis and Lyme. Repellent, and a tick check after every beach day.
  • Etiquette: standard naturist rules apply; Latvian nudist zones are relaxed, family-inclusive, and protective of the calm.

The Bottom Line

Latvia offers something rare: legal, municipally signed nude beaches within commuter-train distance of a gorgeous capital city, plus a sauna culture where nudity is heritage. Base in Riga, beach-hop the Gulf of Riga by train, finish with a pirts ritual, and you’ll wonder why nobody told you about nude Latvia before.

Where to Stay in Jūrmala

Most of Latvia’s naturist beaches sit within easy reach of Riga, and Jūrmala is the classic base: a historic spa town of wooden villas, 25 minutes by suburban train from the capital, with its own beach right on the Gulf of Riga. Use the map to compare guesthouses and spa hotels:
