The Country That Legally Gazettes Its Nude Beaches
Most countries leave naturism in a gray zone of tolerance. Australia took the opposite approach: its states formally gazette clothing-optional beaches under law, with clear signage, council recognition, and police protection for bathers inside the zones. From a harbour cove in Sydney to a surf beach south of Adelaide and a river bend in Canberra, here’s the complete guide to nude travel in Australia.
The Legal Framework
Public nudity is generally an offence across Australia’s states and territories, but every mainland state except Queensland has a statutory mechanism to declare legal clothing-optional zones. NSW uses the Local Government Act and national parks regulations; South Australia, Victoria, and Western Australia gazette beaches under their own legislation; even the Northern Territory has had formal Nudity Regulations since 1976. Inside a designated zone, you’re legal. Outside one, you’re not, so the golden rule is to check before you strip.
Sydney and New South Wales
Sydney is one of the few world cities with legal nude beaches inside its main harbour:
- Lady Bay Beach (Lady Jane), Watsons Bay – declared clothing-optional in 1976, a tiny harbour cove in Sydney Harbour National Park, with a mixed, respectful crowd and city views. A 15-minute walk from the ferry.
- Obelisk Beach, Mosman – gazetted in 1978, a quiet harbourside strip popular with gay locals and naturists alike.
- Cobblers Beach, Middle Head – gazetted in 1979, many regulars’ favourite Sydney nude beach, protected and scenic.
- Samurai Beach, Port Stephens – a designated clothing-optional beach in Tomaree National Park north of Newcastle, reachable by 4WD or walking track, with a lively naturist camping scene nearby.
- Tyagarah Beach, Byron Bay – Byron Shire’s designated naturist beach, a long wild stretch of the north coast. (Note: its status has faced periodic council review, so check current signage.)
- Armands Beach, Bermagui – the far south coast’s gazetted nude beach, quiet and beautiful.
One caution: Little Congwong Beach in La Perouse is popularly used but was formally refused official status in 2018, so it carries real legal risk despite the crowds.
South Australia: Maslin Beach
Gazetted in 1975, Maslin Beach was Australia’s first legal nude beach and remains its most famous: a kilometer-long clothing-optional section beneath dramatic cliffs, about 45 minutes south of Adelaide. It’s also home to the Pilwarren Maslin Beach Nudo-lympics (formerly the Nude Olympics, renamed after the Australian Olympic Committee objected), a January institution featuring three-legged races, tug-of-war, and a best-bum contest that draws hundreds of naturists every summer.
Victoria, Western Australia and the Rest
- Victoria: three designated beaches – Sunnyside North on the Mornington Peninsula, plus Point Impossible and Southside near Torquay on the surf coast.
- Western Australia: Swanbourne Beach in Perth (gazetted 1976) and Warnbro Beach south of the city.
- Northern Territory: Casuarina Beach in Darwin, a designated section under the NT’s Nudity Regulations, patrolled and popular with locals.
- Canberra (ACT): Kambah Pool, a clothing-optional river beach on the Murrumbidgee – yes, the national capital has a legal nude swimming hole.
Queensland is the exception: it has no legal nude beaches anywhere, and police do patrol unofficial spots like Noosa’s Alexandria Bay. Naturists in QLD use private resorts instead (below).
Naturist Resorts and Retreats
Australia’s resort scene is small but excellent, and it’s the legal outlet in Queensland:
- Noosa Edge Nudist Retreat (Noosa Hinterland, QLD) – adults-only boutique retreat with pool, spa and sauna.
- Synergy Beachside Nudist Retreat (Hervey Bay, QLD) – a strict clothing-free stay minutes from the beach.
- Elephant Rock Naturist Retreat (Scenic Rim, QLD) – bushland cabins and camping near Lake Moogerah.
- Twin Falls Naturist Retreat (NSW mid-north coast) – 100 rainforest acres with nude bushwalking tracks and creek swimming.
- Sunland Holiday Village (Robe, SA) – a naturist holiday park with its own beach section on the Limestone Coast.
The Dark Mofo Nude Solstice Swim
Each June 21, more than 2,000 people strip naked at sunrise on Hobart’s Long Beach and dive into the icy Derwent River, closing out Tasmania’s Dark Mofo festival under a special council permit. It’s the southern hemisphere’s biggest mass nude swim, and one of the most joyous nude events anywhere.
When to Go
Remember the seasons are reversed: December to February is summer. For Sydney, South Australia and Victoria, aim for December-March. The subtropical east coast (Byron Bay, Noosa) is best in spring (September-November) and autumn (March-May) to dodge the humidity. For Darwin and the tropical north, come in the dry season (May-September); the wet brings box jellyfish to the water.
Etiquette and Tips
- Obey the signs. Zones end where the signage ends; Australia enforces its boundaries.
- No photography of other beachgoers, the universal rule, taken seriously here.
- Sit on a towel, and give clothed groups space at mixed beaches.
- Check current status for Tyagarah and any retreat before booking; council reviews and ownership changes happen.
The Bottom Line
Australia is one of the world’s most organized nude travel destinations: legal, signed, and patrolled beaches in almost every state, a naturist resort network, and two genuinely fun annual events. Anchor a trip around Sydney’s harbour coves, Maslin Beach in January, and a retreat stay in Queensland, and you’ll have naturist Australia covered coast to coast.

Where to Stay in Sydney
Sydney’s harbour coves, Lady Bay and Obelisk, are both inside the city itself, so any base in the eastern suburbs or the CBD puts you minutes from the ferry. Compare places to stay:
