Naturism in Catalonia: Mar Bella, Sitges, the Costa Brava and Platja del Torn

Catalonia handles naturism with characteristic civic pragmatism: Barcelona runs an official nudist zone on a city beach, Sitges mixes naturist and gay beach culture, the Costa Brava hides naturist coves among its pine-clad cliffs, and the Costa Daurada hosts what many call Catalonia’s finest naturist beach – with a naturist resort right on it. All of it sits within Spain’s uniquely tolerant legal framework, where simple nudity has been decriminalized since 1988.

Barcelona: Nudity on a City Beach

Platja de la Mar Bella is Barcelona’s officially designated naturist zone – a clothing-optional section in front of the Mar Bella sports complex near the Bac de Roda groyne, shielded from the promenade by a dune screen, and a genuine anomaly: legal, social nudity inside a major European city. The southern end of Sant Sebastià, near the W Hotel, holds a council-acknowledged clothing-optional tradition. Expect a mixed crowd and, on summer weekends, the one nuisance urban naturism can’t shake: clothed onlookers. Barcelona’s 2011 civility ordinance bans nudity on city streets but expressly preserves the beach zone.

Sitges: The Inclusive Classic

Cala Balmins, just east of town between Sant Sebastià beach and the marina, is an officially recognized clothing-optional cove with a chiringuito and a famously mixed gay-straight-textile-nude crowd. South along the coast, Platja de l’Home Mort – the “Dead Man’s Beach” – is one of the world’s oldest gay nude beaches, reached by a scenic cliff walk under the railway. One correction worth making: Bassa Rodona, Sitges’ famous gay beach, is not a nudist beach – it’s urban, central and strictly swimwear territory.

Costa Brava: Coves and Pines

The classic naturist spots of the Costa Brava: Platja d’Illa Roja at Begur, named for the red rock spire standing in the bay, is the recognized nudist beach of the Aiguablava area; Cala Estreta near Palamós is a pine-ringed naturist classic; and Platja de la Musclera at Arenys de Mar has an official, signposted naturist zone at its western end. (Ignore lists that include Cala Pola at Tossa de Mar – it’s a family textile beach.)

Costa Daurada: Platja del Torn, Catalonia’s Flagship

Platja del Torn at L’Hospitalet de l’Infant is widely considered Catalonia’s premier naturist beach: an official naturist zone, protected as a Natural Interest Area, with Blue Flag status – naturism with infrastructure, in other words. Right on it stands Camping Naturista El Templo del Sol, a Moorish-style beachfront naturist resort. The preserve of Les Madrigueres between Coma-ruga and Calafell adds a wild naturist section, while a correction: Cunit and Calafell’s urban beaches are textile, nudism discouraged on their promenade beaches.

Campings, the Inland Village and the Catalan Scene

Catalonia’s naturist camping options are among Spain’s best: Càmping Relax-Nat is a four-star naturist campsite at Mont-ras near Palafrugell on the Costa Brava (a location correction for the many guides that place it in Cunit), and El Fonoll is a restored medieval inland village operating year-round as an ecological naturist community – one of Europe’s most unusual naturism destinations. The scene is organized: the Club Català de Naturisme (founded 1977) runs events from Música Nua concerts to the naturist runs along Platja del Torn, and international naturist youth gatherings take place at Relax-Nat.
