Abricó and Olho de Boi: Rio de Janeiro’s Official Nude Beaches

Rio de Janeiro sells an image of near-naked beach culture to the world – yet in the entire municipality there is exactly one beach where nudity is legal, tucked inside a protected wild park on the far western edge of the city. Combine it with Búzios’ hidden cove and you have the perfect naturist side-trip to Brazil’s most visited city.

Abricó: Rio’s Official Nude Beach

Praia de Abricó first received official status through Municipal Decree 13.524 in 1994, and in November 2014 the city made it permanent with Municipal Law 5.807. It sits inside the Parque Natural Municipal de Grumari in the Recreio dos Bandeirantes area, about 48 km west of Copacabana – a winding coastal drive along Avenida Estado da Guanabara past the surfers’ cove of Prainha, with parking along the road above the beach.

The beach is watched over by ANAbricó (Associação Naturista de Abricó), a federation-affiliated association. Nudity is mandatory in the designated area on weekends and public holidays, and recommended on weekdays. The social geography is well established: the eastern end near the main entrance draws couples and families, while the western end toward the Grumari rocks is the long-standing gay and LGBTQ+ gathering area.

Olho de Boi: The Búzios Cove

Three hours up the coast, the resort peninsula of Armação dos Búzios hides Praia Olho de Boi (“Ox’s Eye”), officialized by Municipal Law 1.026/1997. It is one of Brazil’s smallest official naturist beaches – a pristine cove reached by a 25-minute coastal trail from Praia Brava. Note the common confusion: Praia Brava itself is a textile beach; only the cove beyond its eastern trail is naturist. There are no facilities, so bring water and shade.

Planning the Trip

  • Abricó: From Copacabana or Ipanema, allow 60-90 minutes by car or rideshare to the Grumari entrance; buses reach Recreio with transfers. Weekday mornings are quietest.
  • Olho de Boi: Fly or drive to Búzios (Cabo Frio airport CFB is nearest), stay on the Praia Brava side, and hike early before the sun is high.
  • Season: Rio is warm year-round; December-March is hot and lively, May-September milder and quieter.
