Two of Europe’s smallest states sit in the middle of the German-speaking naturist world, and they could not be more different. Liechtenstein, wedged between Switzerland and Austria, has no naturist scene at all – no federation, no clubs, no designated beaches, no trails. Luxembourg, three hundred kilometers west, quietly runs one of the most complete naturist microstates on Earth: an INF-member federation, a four-star naturist resort, a recognized lakeside nude beach, and a résumé that includes hosting the INF World Congress. This is the honest verdict on both.
Liechtenstein: The Zero
The Principality’s verdict is unambiguous. Public nudity falls under police regulations on public order and decency, with no designated naturist exceptions; the public pools – Freibad Mühleholz near Vaduz, the Hallenbad Eschen – require swimsuits without exception; and no naturist association, club or federation has ever existed in the country. Hotel saunas follow the regional textile-free norm inside the cabin, so a sauna evening in Vaduz is authentically nude – but the wider infrastructure is zero, and Liechtenstein’s naturists simply cross the border: to Switzerland’s Camping Thielle or Zurich saunas, or to the Austrian lakes of Vorarlberg and Carinthia. In a 160-square-kilometer country between two naturist superpowers, that is the entire picture.

Luxembourg: The Surprise
The Grand Duchy is the opposite story. The Fédération Luxembourgeoise de Naturisme (FeLuNat) is an active INF member representing around 350 naturists, and the country hosted the 38th INF-FNI World Congress in October 2022 – a serious credential for a nation of 660,000. The flagship is Camping De Reenert in Heiderscheid, a four-star dedicated naturist resort in the Luxembourg Ardennes: textile-free grounds with pitches, mobile homes, sauna and sports facilities. The natural counterpart is the Plage de Burfelt on the Upper Sûre lake (Stauséi), the recognized lakeside nude beach near the Forest Discovery Center, with decades of local tolerance; informal sections exist along the Remerschen gravel lakes in the Moselle south. Urban spa culture follows the dual-zone rule from our sauna guide: Les Thermes in Strassen and Mondorf Domaine Thermal keep pools textile and sauna villages nude. Legally, Article 385 of the Penal Code confines public nudity to recognized locations – and Luxembourg, uniquely among microstates, has several.
The Verdict
Liechtenstein is a transit stop with a good sauna; Luxembourg is a genuine weekend destination – Ardennes naturist resort, lake beach, and a federation that punches far above its weight class. Both belong to the wider region mapped by our Switzerland and Austria guides, and the honest itinerary is simple: sleep in Luxembourg, sauna anywhere.
