The Riviera Maya has quietly become one of the world’s best-equipped destinations for clothing-optional resort travel – a compact strip of Quintana Roo coastline holding Mexico’s only true naturist all-inclusive, a couple of lifestyle-oriented alternatives, and a boutique option in Tulum. What it doesn’t have is a single public nude beach: outside resort boundaries, nudity is illegal across the entire state. This guide separates the real options from the marketing.
Hidden Beach Resort: Mexico’s Genuine Naturist Resort
Between Playa del Carmen and Tulum on Kantenah Bay, Hidden Beach Resort Au Naturel Club (Karisma’s Gourmet Inclusive collection) is the real thing: an adults-only 18+, five-star all-inclusive where nudity is the standard across the outdoor grounds – pools, hot tubs, lazy river, beach cabanas, and gardens – with clothing required only indoors. Crucially for solo travelers, Hidden Beach welcomes both couples and singles, which makes it the most accessible true-naturist resort in the country. Day passes run roughly $105-200 per person for about eight hours, occupancy permitting, with reciprocal access to the adjacent (clothed) El Dorado Seaside Suites.
Desire and Temptation: Know What You’re Booking
Original Group runs two Desire properties near Puerto Morelos – Desire Riviera Maya and Desire Pearl – that are couples-only (21+) and lifestyle-oriented: clothing-optional outdoors, mandatory nudity in designated jacuzzi zones and play lounges, and elegant dress required indoors at night. They are excellent at what they are, but they are not naturist resorts in the classic sense, and readers seeking quiet social nudity will be happier at Hidden Beach.
Temptation Cancun is a different animal again: a high-energy party resort that is topless-optional only. Full nudity is strictly forbidden everywhere on the property – bottoms stay on. It appears on “nude resort” lists constantly; it shouldn’t. Similarly, the “Heaven” adults-only section at Hard Rock Riviera Maya is topless-optional at one pool, nothing more.
In Tulum, Intima Resort (now listed under Mak Nuk Village) is a small boutique clothing-optional property in the La Veleta neighborhood – a swim-up pool and jacuzzi in tropical gardens, open to couples and singles, a 15-20 minute drive from the beach zone. And one ghost to bury: “Golden Sea Playa” appears on some AI-generated resort lists and does not exist.

The Law: Why Nudity Stops at the Resort Gate
Mexico’s beaches are federal public domain under the ZOFEMAT maritime-terrestrial zone, and public behavior is enforced through municipal administrative codes in Solidaridad, Benito Juárez, and Tulum. Public nudity is an administrative infraction – fines of roughly $1,000-3,000 MXN, removal from the beach, or up to 36 hours of administrative detention. The resorts operate legally because their clothing-optional areas sit inside private property limits and private beach concessions; step past the boundary markers onto public wet sand nude and you can expect municipal police or navy patrols to take an interest. That’s not a Riviera Maya quirk but a national rule with one famous exception.
Practical Guide
- Getting there: Cancún (CUN) serves everything; Hidden Beach is 45 minutes south of the airport, Desire 25, Temptation 15.
- Season: December through April is prime. Hurricane season is June-November. Late summer is the value window.
- Choosing: True naturism with singles welcome – Hidden Beach. Couples lifestyle scene – Desire. Party topless – Temptation. Boutique quiet – Intima Tulum.
- Cenote caution: Some private cenotes tolerate clothing-optional dips for private groups, but public cenotes absolutely do not – treat them like public beaches.
