The Northeast is where Brazilian naturism gets tropical: red cliffs, coconut palms, warm water – and the strictest mandatory-nudity enforcement in the Americas.
Tambaba: The Checkpoint Beach
Praia de Tambaba, in the municipality of Conde about 30-35 km south of João Pessoa, was officialized as the Northeast’s first naturist beach by Municipal Decree 276 on January 25, 1991 and reinforced by Law 309/2004. What makes Tambaba unusual is its physical division: the north section is an ordinary textile beach with tide pools, viewpoints and restaurants, while the south section – separated by a natural rocky gateway and a security checkpoint – is the naturist sanctuary, and total nudity is mandatory past the checkpoint.
The guardians are real. SONATA (Sociedade Naturista de Tambaba), the association that manages the beach, enforces the rules at the entrance – and the single-men policy here is the strictest in Brazil: unaccompanied men are not admitted to the naturist section unless they arrive with a female partner or hold a valid FBrN/INF naturist passport. Sexual expression and cruising are strictly forbidden inside SONATA’s perimeter. The beach hosts the Tambaba Open de Surf Naturista, the world’s naturist surfing championship, which draws international competitors every year – and in 2008 Tambaba hosted the 31st INF World Naturist Congress. Pousadas right at the beach, including Pousada Tambaba, cater specifically to clothing-optional travelers; note that the large Tambaba Country Club Resort nearby is a standard gated resort, not a naturist village.
Massarandupió: Bahia’s Palm-Lined Newcomer
A day’s drive south along the Coconut Coast, Praia de Massarandupió in Entre Rios, Bahia, is Brazil’s newest official naturist beach – Municipal Law 164/2018 – managed by AMANAT (Associação Massarandupiana de Naturismo). It offers roughly 2 km of palm-lined naturist sand on the Linha Verde, with far fewer people than Tambaba and a wilder feel.
Getting There
- Tambaba: Fly to João Pessoa (JPA) or Recife (REC); the PB-008 highway runs directly to the beach. Local pousadas make overnight stays easy.
- Massarandupió: Fly to Salvador (SSA), then the Linha Verde north toward Entre Rios; expect a drive of roughly two hours from the airport.
- Season: The Northeast is warm year-round; September to March are the driest months, and water temperatures hold around 26-28°C.
